If you’re looking for a game of Magic: The Gathering where the battlefield is constantly changing, one moment you could find yourself battling amid volcanic eruptions whilst the next you might be finding your way through a treacherous base, then that is Planechase. It’s a unique format that gives a layer of excitement and unpredictable chaos to your game.
What is Planechase?
Planechase is a different format in Magic: the Gathering that gives you plane cards. These represent the different locations that can be found across the multiverse. The Planes act like a global enhancement. This affects all the players in the game as a result of their unique static abilities and the chaotic effect they can produce.

How Does it Work?
Let’s look at the key steps:
Every player has their own individual deck of cards that are shuffled and then placed face down. To start the game, one plane is revealed.
A planar die with six sides is used to work out how and when Planes should change. Four sides of the die are blank, one side features the Planeswalker symbol, and the sixth side features the chaos symbol.
When it is your turn, the planar die is rolled
If you get the Planeswalker symbol you "Planeswalk" to the next plane in your deck and replace the current one.
If you get the chaos symbol the current plane's "chaos" ability is triggered, and this unleashes a powerful and often unpredictable effect.
Chaos abilities can vary significantly, whether they are dealing damage to creatures or creating tokens that completely alter the rules of the game. This provides an element of randomness that keeps players on their toes whilst creating memorable gameplay moments.
Why Play Planechase?
There are many reasons to play Planechase – here are just some of them:
It’s unpredictable
Each game will be very different from what you've played before. There is a dynamic and surprising experience as a result of the continually changing Planes and the chaotic effects at work.
It has strategic depth
Chaos definitely plays a very important role, but it is still possible to strategise around those abilities of the current plane whilst also anticipating any potential chaos effects.
You can explore the multiverse
Planechase offers players the opportunity to experience a wide range of Planes from within the lore of Magic. Each of these Planes offers its own unique take on both mechanics and flavour.
It can improve the social experience
Planechase has an unpredictable nature that can encourage interaction and at the same time create moments that are exciting for all players.
Planechase Chaos
For those players who want just a little bit more mayhem, then there is Planechase Chaos. This is a variant that adds yet another layer of randomness through the introduction of phenomenon cards. These cards represent a number of powerful events that can be triggered alongside chaos abilities, providing even more of an unpredictable nature to the format.
